Helfer is a native of the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada in Canada, the children of Dennis Elaine and Dennis Elaine Helfer. She has German, English and Swedish heritage. She attended in the William E. Hay Composite High School, located in Stettler (Alberta). She worked and lived on the family's grain farm alongside her three sisters: Trena, Tammy and Tara. When she was 17 a modeling scout at an agency spotted Helfer when he was waiting at the front of a line for entry into a cinema.
